General Information

School History:

In the latter part of 1973 Mr J.A. Laburn, the Inspector of Education for the Boksburg Circuit, approached Mr P.A. Vos with the proposal to be the founding principal of a new school to be established in Benoni Central. Mr Vos agreed and he chaired the inaugural meeting held with parents in the zone at Benoni West Primary on the 28th of November 1973. The school formally opened its doors for 431 students and 24 members of staff on the 9th of January 1974. The school’s primary building was that of the old Benoni High which had vacated the premises to take possession of their new facility in Northmead.

The first Chairman of the School Committee was the Reverend S.D. Smuts, the vice-chair was Mr J.R. Barrable ( who died tragically in August of 1974) and Mr E. Wilkinson who was chairman of the P.T.A. Mr Vos would continue to serve as principal to 1977.

On the 5th of April official approval was received from the Department of Education that the school name would be Willowmoore High and that its school motto would be “Nous Croissons” – We grow together. The school name was determined because of the proximity of the school to the Willowmoore Park sports grounds. [The name of this institution was derived from the number of Willow trees in the area and from the surname of Mr A.Hans. Moore the town councilor and mayor for Benoni in 1929, who also had Hans Moore Technical High School named after him.]

In its first year Willowmoore was already active extra-murally by participating in Swimming, Rugby, Netball, Athletics, Hockey, Tennis, Chess and S.C.A. The first group of 64 matriculants passed their Senior Certificate examination in 1976 with 4 distrinctions.
