Dear Parents and Learners
The interview process for another Deputy Principal was completed and we are pleased to announce that Mrs (Mahomed) Vania has been appointed from 1 October 2017. We wish her all the best as she takes on the role of Deputy Principal Curriculum.
Special notice:
Advance notice is given of the SGB AGM and budget meeting to be held on 24th October 2017 at 19.00 in the school hall. It is important that you diarise this event and attend as we need a quorum in order to approve the budget. Please make it a priority.
Attached is the proposed budget for 2018.
Interhouse events
This week saw Interhouse events being staged for Volleyball, Kgathi and Umkusha. Well done to all those who took part and especially to those learners who participated in Indigenous Games for the first time.
Ongoing Concerns
We are addressing the issue of ‘Drugs in schools’ and will be doing random searches and random drug testing. If you are concerned about your child’s behaviour, please let us know so that we can offer support and keep our school DRUG FREE!
Please take note of where your children are gathering after school. Learners should not be gambling at the bottom of the road but instead going home. Please organize transport to fetch them so that they do not hang around and get up to mischief.
We are also addressing the litter in the school. Some learners are just too lazy to put the litter into a bin even if they are sitting right next to it. It is everyone’s responsibility to STOP, PICK IT UP, PUT IT IN THE BIN. Everyone can help and do their bit to keep the environment clean.
Uniform: Learners must wear correct summer uniform from 9th October 2017. No beanies or scarves. The school baseball cap or cricket hat may be worn. The grade 11 and 12 learners should be wearing blazers at all times. Please ensure that the boys and girls hair styles are in line with the school rules. The wearing of caps is not an excuse for incorrect hairstyles. Dri-macs are worn in rainy weather only or for sport. Please ensure that your child is correctly dressed for school.
We will have a uniform and hair check on the 9th October – please ensure that your child is correctly dressed so that we do not have to call and send your child home to sort out uniform or hair issues.
Some learners are participating in the Lego Robotics competition from the end of September to 2 December. Good luck in your endeavours to make the robot do what it needs to do in order to complete specified tasks.
A special “thank you” to the ground staff for keeping the grounds and the toilets clean.
Textbooks:
All textbooks need to be returned according to the time table that will be issued in October. No deposits will be used to replace lost or damaged textbooks. The learners will have to pay R200 per book that has been lost or damaged.
Reminders:
Request for learners to leave school early:
A letter of request addressed to the Principal should be presented at the Information office before school, except in the case of an emergency e.g. death in the family. The request will be processed and the learner will be called at the end of a lesson where possible. All learners need to be signed out and an exit slip must be obtained from the Information office before the learner will be allowed to leave. If someone other than the parent is fetching the learner, we will require a letter from the parent giving the person permission and a copy of that person’s ID.
Counselling:
All educators are available should you need to speak to anyone. If the matter is sensitive, you may put it in writing to the Principal and the matter will then be forwarded to the relevant person to assist you.
The Heads of Grade assist with discipline and academic problems.
The SBST member for general counselling is Mrs Kata.
The SBST member for homework sessions in the afternoon is Ms Zerf.
The SBST member for account related issues and the feeding scheme is Mrs Healey.
The Student Liaison officer, Mrs van der Heever, is responsible for general counselling and basic first aid assistance.
The social worker, Mrs Hennessy, is available on referral from one of the above SBST members and she will make an appointment with the learner and or family.
Road safety:
Do not walk or play in the road. When getting off taxis, please do not just rush across the road and check for oncoming vehicles.
